Local Interest:

The Myakka River is a significantly diverse dark water river approximately 60 miles in length just off the gulf coast of southwest Florida. Due to strong citizen interest in preservation of it’s pristine nature and scenic qualities, the Myakka River was declared a ‘Wild and Scenic River’ by the Florida State Legislature in 1985. Only two rivers in the state are recognized and privileged with this ‘Wild and Scenic’ level of special state protection.

The downtown 'Mainstreet' area of Venice offers an elegant village atmosphere where personalized service and friendly banter are the norm. The historic preservation of the area has developed and renewed the Northern Italian architecture of old. Pleasant breezes from the beaches a few blocks away sweep through the palm-lined streets. The beach itself is just a short walk away through shaded park style paths. Convenient benches, gazebos and restaurants offering dining al fresco' beckon you to relax and enjoy the 'local flavor'.

The variety of shops and restaurants you discover in and around the downtown area will surprise and delight. You will literally find the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker, artists, antiques, handmade confections, second-hand notions, one-of collections, hand-dipped ice cream, and the list goes on and on and on! Way too many really neat places for us to try to list. Practically any item, product, or service desired is available in the downtown area of Venice.
