Taking Care of Business in the Great Outdoors
Campgrounds offer the ideal setting for meetings and retreats -- anyone who has ever sat through a presentation in a bland meeting room can relate to how quickly boredom and daydreaming can set in. But there’s an easy solution for that dilemma: consider holding your next meeting or executive retreat at a campground.
Not only do campgrounds offer a breath of fresh air — both literally and figuratively — but many of them offer the conference facilities and teambuilding activities needed to make meetings more productive. Here are a few examples of campgrounds across the country that are well equipped for taking care of business:
Putting Golf on the Agenda
Set in the beautiful northeast corner of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, Thunder Bay Resort offers a choice of luxury cabins, charming chalets, spacious villas and deluxe fairway suites as well as private facilities for meetings and events. Catering services are also available, and when it’s time for golf, the resort’s 18-hole, 6,700 yard tree-lined course promises to deliver plenty of challenges.
Park City, Ky.
Located in southern Kentucky at the gateway to Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system in the world, Diamond Caverns RV Resort offers one and two bedroom condos for rent as well as full hookup RV sites. When it’s time for recreation, there’s an 18-hole golf course as well as basketball, bocce ball, volleyball, billiards and hiking and biking trails.
Meeting Under the Sun or by the Sea
Located 10 minutes north of Monterey, Marina Dunes Beach Resort provides a choice of fully-furnished cottages and group tent sites. For meetings, the resort has a clubhouse with a fireplace, and when it’s time to enjoy some fresh ocean air, a short walk across the dunes gives the group access to 10 miles of Monterey Bay beachfront.
With its choice of vacation home rentals, RV park and campsites, Sun N Fun RV Resort offers everything needed to take care of business, including meeting facilities, free Wi-Fi service and audio visual equipment. When they’re ready for a little R and R, meeting attendees can head for the heated lap pool, steam room, sauna or one of two exercise rooms. For dining, there’s the Boondocks Restaurant and Poolside Bar and Grill.
Taking Time for Teambuilding
Lady Lake, Fla.
Set amid the majestic oaks and gently rolling pastures of Florida’s horse country, this equestrian-themed resort offers homes and cottages for rent, as well as meeting facilities and food and beverage services onsite. For teambuilding, groups can choose from a menu of activities, including fly fishing, tennis, horseback riding and a polo camp. The resort is also home to the Florida Carriage Museum, which contains one of the world’s largest private collections of carriages and equine artifacts.
Angels Camp, Calif.
Featuring tent and RV sites, cabins and country lodges that sleep up to six, and a meeting room, Angels Camp RV & Camping Resort is located in the Central Sierra foothills east of Stockton and Modesto. For teambuilding, there’s championship golf, zip lining, and fishing at one of the largest lakes in the state as well as a beach volleyball court and horseshoes.
Staying Close to the City
Located one hour southwest of Boston, Normandy Farms is well-equipped to handle business meetings in its 20,000 square foot lodge that also includes an indoor pool, fitness center and wellness center. There’s even a full-service business center onsite. For accommodations, groups can choose from campsites, deluxe cabins and yurts, only these aren’t your typical yurts – they come equipped with flat screen TVs and fireplaces.
Located near Dallas on the shores of beautiful Grapevine Lake, The Vineyards Campground & Cabins features a group pavilion as well as fully-furnished cabins that include Wi-Fi. For teambuilding and recreation, the resort offers a choice of fishing, hiking, horseshoes, kayaking, basketball and volleyball.
