Tent camping is one of the most popular ways to enjoy the outdoors. You can easily fit your essentials in your car, it doesn't cost much, and you can experience some of the best the outdoors has to offer with little effort. Here are some of our favorite campgrounds where you can pitch a tent, enjoy the outdoors, and still get all the amenities a campground has to offer.

Maine

Have an experience you can rarely get by claiming an oceanfront campsite at Bar Harbor Camping Resorts - Narrows Too. This campground is just a short walk from Acadia National Forest where you can explore some truly amazing hiking trails. Whale watching, lighthouse tours, canoeing, kayaking, road biking, and discovering quaint East Coast towns are also great options available to campers.

New Hampshire

Country Bumpkins Campground and Cabins is located near Lincoln, which is in the middle of White Mountain National Forest. The campground features tent camping sites that sit right along to the Pemigewasset River, allowing guests to wade in the river or enjoy some fishing. If hiking the national forest is in your itinerary then be prepared with rain or wind gear as the mountain weather is often unpredictable even if a sunny day is forecasted.

New York

Just a short drive from both Adirondack Park Preserve in New York and Green Mountain National Forest in Vermont, Lake Lauderdale Campground is a great place to stake down your tent. The spacious campground offers privacy among its many pine trees and each site is equipped with a fire pit and a picnic table. The campground hosts more than 40 weekend events throughout the year, so it's a good chance you'll be able to catch some entertainment or freshly prepared meals during your stay.

California

A hideaway resort located just five miles from the west gate of Yosemite National Park, Yosemite Lakes RV Resort sits on one of the most majestic natural settings in the country with plenty of woods, water and mountains to explore right outside your campsite. With 130 tent sites to choose from, you'll be able to find a spot that's just right. Another perk: the south fork of the Tuolumne River runs right through the preserve and is ideal for swimming, fishing and panning for gold.

Washington

Rural America at its finest, John Wayne's Waterfront Resort is located in the famous dry belt of Sequim,, near the northeast entrance of the Olympic National Park and is nestled between the majestic Olympic Mountains and the placid waters of Sequim Bay. The camping resort is centrally located in the beautiful northern part of the Washington peninsula, which makes it a great home base from which to branch out and visit various other popular tourist destinations on the peninsula and in Victoria, B.C.

Utah

The Zion River Resort is a green valley oasis, huddled beside the Virgin River and surrounded by painted mountains. From the resort, you can take day trips to Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon North Rim, Cedar Breaks National Monument and many other of the southwest's most popular destinations. New Mexico

Taos Monte Bello RV Park is located on five acres of beautiful, open space and sits on the high-desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It's a great place to pitch a tent and then head out and explore the spectacular natural environment or discover the quaint town of Taos.

North Carolina

Campfire Lodgings is located on a mountain ridge and has some unbelievable views. Its tent sites are located in a natural wooded setting, so you'll have a full camping experience but still have access to amenities. The campground likes to quip, "There is no video game room, but there are lots of wildflowers and berry brambles." If you're looking to get away, this is a perfect campground.

Virginia

Nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Heavenly Acres Campground features 80 acres of Virginia woods with wooded, generous tent sites. The beautiful Skyline Drive is only fifteen minutes away along with the Shenandoah National Park, Jefferson's Monticello, numerous antique stores, vineyards, caverns, historical sites and battlefields.

Tennessee

Misty River Cabins RV Resort Situated in a small valley surrounded by mountains, Misty River Cabins RV Resort is a great tent camping location with nearby destination points that include Pigeon Forge, Cades Cove, The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Tuckaleechee Caverns, The Tail of the Dragon, and much more. If you don't feel like exploring, you can take advantage of the swimming pool or river frontage that's located on the campground.
