State Overview

South Dakota, the Mount Rushmore state, is diverse with the gorgeous scenic vistas of the breathtaking Black Hills and Badlands and the changing rolling prairies.  Visitors enjoy our friendly and hospitable people and the wide-open spaces as the state ranks 16th in size with a population of only 754,844.  The many national and state parks provide numerous areas of interest and recreation.  The state is rich in history and culture. The town of Deadwood is a designated National Historic District and is known for frontier legends like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane,  and Native American culture is evident throughout the state.
