Metropolitan Minnesota is famous for urban Minneapolis and historic Saint Paul. North Central/West Minnesota is where the Midwest prairies are bounded by the North Woods and are broken up by the largest lakes in Minnesota, which flow into the starting point of the Mississippi River at Itasca State Park. The Alexandria Lakes offers dozens of lakes around Alexandria with prime fishing, boating, sailing, water-skiing and windsurfing opportunities. Scenic western Chippewa National Forest is located between Cass Lake and Blackduck. The Red Lake Chippewa Nation Reservation area offers a rustic getaway for fishing and hunting. The Brainerd Lakes/Mille Lacs area offers unlimited recreation, including fishing, boating and sailing on 460 lakes, golf courses, biking & snowmobiling on the new Paul Bunyan Trail, hiking, cross-country & downhill skiing and amusement parks. State history comes alive at Mille Lacs Indian Museum, which traces the life and culture of the Ojibwe, Croft Mine State Park and the boyhood home of aviator Charles Lindbergh. The Central Lakes is the heart of Minnesota and offers the thriving city of St. Cloud, lush farmland, fishing & boating lakes on Lake Minnewaska & many others, Glacial Lakes State Park near Glenwood, historic sites and more. Expansive Leech Lake & Lake Winnibigoshish (aka "Winnie") lie in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest.
